A Family Tradition

July 11th marked our annual Smith family trip to the mountains of Cashiers, NC where we stayed at the wonderful High Hampton Inn.  This was Tyler's first 'long' road trip and our first family vacation.  On the way there, we stopped a little over half way in Pigeon Forge, TN and met up with Rex, Janna, Reagan and Clay for the day.  We arrived in Pigeon Forge a few hours earlier than the others so we went to Wonderworks and played around then had lunch at Fudrucker's.

Our morning started off great.  We woke Tyler up, changed his diaper and put him in the car.  He slept about three more hours, then woke about 45-minutes outside of our destination.  By that time, he was ready to get out of his seat.  We stopped inside a McDonald's to change his clothes and get some pancakes (a treat) for him.  He did so well in the car and only got fussy with about ten minutes left to go.

Tyler got to swim for the very first time and just wasn't so sure.  He wanted in then out, in then out.  I didn't bring my bathing suit so he swam with Daddy and Uncle Rex.  He wasn't a fan of the big kids splashing so I think that is why he wanted out, then back in several different times.  A family sitting close to us had some bright and colorful water guns that caught Tyler's eye.  He gracefully walked over to them and picked them up.  The mother of the children told me he could play with them so he had a ball.  He didn't know what to do with the water gun, but he had a good time carrying it around.  I of course, was a nervous wreck as  I followed him around the pool.  Even though he wasn't close to the edge of the pool, I still am so leery of water.

After a late afternoon swim, we headed inside our hotel to get ready for dinner.  Reagan chose the restaurant (I am ashamed that I can't remember the name) and it was delicious.  Tyler wasn't that interested in sitting still though, so he and I made a few laps around the place.  After we had eaten, Reagan and Clay came with us to the lobby where Tyler could run around because it was enclosed with glass doors.  It was perfect.  He was able to run freely without me holding his hand.

Once we left the restaurant, we headed to the outlet mall to check out a few stores.  By the time we were finished shopping at Old Navy, it was time to take Tyler to the hotel to get ready for bed.  He didn't have much of a nap because we had to take him from the car to the hotel, but there was too much commotion for him to stay asleep.  Once we got inside our room, he was mesmerized by the A/C and the luggage cart that there was no chance in getting him back to sleep.

Our little family of three was exhausted so all of us were asleep by 9 AM.  We slept like babies!

The next morning we woke up, showered, had breakfast then made our way to High Hampton.  Luckily, it was only a 2 1/2 hour drive.  Tyler slept the entire way so he was ready to go once we arrived.  It was so nice to see Nikki, Shawn, Dillon and Damon who drove all the way from Texas.  Tyler and I didn't make the trip last year because I had just gone back to work and wasn't able to get any more time off so they had not met him yet.

After we unpacked the car, we all headed into the dining room for a delicious, fresh and healthy lunch.  Once that wrapped up, the guys hit the golf course while we, along with Suzy, Janna, Reagan and Clay went down to the lake and play area.  Tyler played in the sand, although he wasn't a fan of it being stuck to his hands.

I bought Tyler a small plastic set of golf clubs that we gave him once we got settled into our room.  Talk about obsessed...he carried a golf club around with him every time we left our room.  He loved them!  He also loved riding in the golf cart and watching the guys play.  I think we have a little golfer on our hands which will make Daddy, Pop and Uncle Rex proud.  To this day, he takes a golf club with him everyday to school.  He knows that once we walk into his classroom, that he has to put his club into his backpack.  At the end of t he day when we pick him up, he immediately reaches for his club and removes it from his bag.  I never knew $4 could bring so much entertainment to my little nugget.

We all enjoyed a nice nap and some more play time before dinner.   We did the same thing pretty much every day, but enjoyed every second.  On Saturday, Rich didn't play the afternoon 18 so he stayed with Tyler while Suzy and I went into town to do a little shopping.  The town of Cashiers has the best little shops so I always enjoy looking.

Unfortunately, our trip flew by in the blink of an eye.  We put Tyler to bed two hours past his bedtime and woke him two hours before his wake-up time.  He was asleep before we pulled out of High Hampton and didn't open his eyes until we pulled onto our street.  We were running on fumes by the time we pulled into our driveway, but it was worth it to not wake a sleeping baby.  We knew that once he woke, he would want out of his car-seat so it was best to ride until he got home.

I am already looking forward to next year!
