My mother-in-law, Suzy has written another book that's been published.
When Rich was a little kid, she wrote a children's book that had some success. Now? Years later, she's hit us in the face with another book that's been published.
Sterling Bits is a cookbook / sketchbook about the Bluegrass equestrian experience. Suzy wrote all the chapters and did all of the artwork (including the cover), and Kathy Mayfield throws in easy-to-make tasty treats appropriate for each event. Its amazingly cool.
Wanna see the cover? Here.
Suzy does an excellent job of breaking down the history and tradition of each of Kentucky's race tracks as well as the etiquette when you are around it all. When is it the proper time to speak to a jockey? Should you ever try and pet a pony? What should you ask a trainer? How do you compliment an owner? All of these are answered.
Meanwhile, Kathy really brings it with such simple, but incredible recipes for each horse event, dinner party, or casual cocktail gatherings. Lots of people know how to make a Mint Julep for the Derby. But did you know a "Zing Eye Red" may spice things up for people who think the Julep is too sweet? And they go well with "Quarter Pole Quiche", which, by the way, is easy to make.
Finally, like I said, Suzy is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay talented. I can draw nothing. She's sold more art than she'll ever tell. The illustrations in Sterling Bits blew me away. She sketches everything from hounds to foxes to ponies on the track...heck, she even snuck in one of The Smith's old corgis.
The best part of all this? She kept this a secret for over a year. Literally only told Rich's Dad and that was it.
"Oh, by the way, I got a book published."
WHAT?? WAIT? HUH?
"Yeah. Its been a lot of work but we got it published." She casually said in passing.
...wow.
If you'd like a copy, they are $21.15 with taxes. We brought several copies home with us, just give me a shout and I'll get you one. They'd look really stylish in your kitchen.
